White Elephant Gift Exchange

This is a fun idea for holiday parties and you don’t really need themed decorations or anything special. Here’s the general guidelines and some may refer to this as Dirty Santa.

  • Gift Guidelines: Guests are usually asked to bring a wrapped gift within a specified price range. The gifts can be funny, quirky, or even useful. Sometimes, the theme is to bring something you already own (a “white elephant” being an item that’s interesting but impractical).
  • Drawing Numbers: Each person draws a number to determine the order in which they’ll pick a gift.
  • Choosing Gifts: The person with number one selects and unwraps a gift. The next person can either choose a new wrapped gift or “steal” the unwrapped gift from the first person. If a gift is stolen, the person who had their gift taken can then pick a new gift or steal from someone else.
  • Rules on Stealing: Typically, a gift can only be stolen a certain number of times (e.g., twice or three times) before it becomes “frozen” and can no longer be taken.
  • Continuing the Game: The game continues until all participants have had a turn. The first person to pick may get a chance to steal at the end, since they didn’t get that chance at the beginning.

Gift exchanges are a great idea for older teens and will even works for small groups or large groups.
